Ocean Water
I looked up at the stars through treetops
Let my head fall back and hugged my knees
The waves crashed, one after another
Wind howled as I contemplated the tides
And water, so much water, then me
Debt, dependency and heartache crumble
Like a sandcastle, like being weakened
By pure awe in someone's strong presence
Paralyzed by optimism and the hope of potential
That the feeling of wating is over...
Car Key, House Key
He opens the door
His car door, and steps out
On to the pavement
Puts one foot in front of the other
Reaches for his keys
In his sweatshirt pocket
A gray, zip-up hoodie
With flecks of white paint
A gift, one night when he was cold
Slides the key into the lock
Twists and pulls open the door
The exterior door, it's heavy
Strides towards 1-1-1
Glancing at his uninterested neighbors' doors
They have no names
But they have their own world
Secrets they won't tell
He opens the door, flicks the light on
And puts things in places
